GY6 Movement Coming Soon!

The term "GY6" stands for "Got Your 6," and in the context of military, veteran, and first responder communities, it has transitioned from a tactical phrase to a powerful, life-saving shorthand for mental health solidarity and suicide prevention.
The phrase originates from pilot and military terminology. Imagine standing in the center of a clock face, facing forward toward 12 o’clock. Your 6 o'clock is directly behind you—the ultimate blind spot.
The Literal Meaning: Telling someone "I've got your 6" means "I am watching your back. I am covering your most vulnerable, unprotected side."
In suicide prevention: In suicide prevention, it translates to: "When you are blinded by pain, trauma, or whatever is being thrown your way that you feel you are unable to handle, someone is watching over you. You don't have to fight this alone."
Why this is important: For service members and first responders, admitting to a mental health struggle can feel like a sign of weakness or a liability. "GY6" reframes seeking help from a "flaw" into a shared team responsibility. It reminds individuals that relying on your team to clear your blind spots is a tactical necessity, both on the battlefield and in civilian life.
When someone is experiencing severe suicidal ideation, they often cannot find the words to explain their pain. "GY6" acts as a shorthand code.
Saying or texting "I need someone to cover my 6" allows an individual to signal that they are in distress without having to give a lengthy, overwhelming explanation. It immediately alerts the receiver that the person is feeling vulnerable and needs immediate, non-judgmental support.
It promise a struggling individual that even if they feel completely surrounded by darkness, someone is standing right behind them, refusing to let them fall.
On January 01, 2025, I decided to start a movement which I am calling the 'GY6 Movement'.
I am passionate about suicide prevention and it breaks my heart each time I hear of a suicide. It makes me so sad to know that someone came to point in their life where they thought the only choice they had left in life was to end theirs.
The GY6 Movement is being created because I envision a world where people come together to support one another with actions that will lead to a brighter future. I believe that we can each provide inspiration to not only those we know and love, but to those we may never meet.
I hope you will join me in the commitment to support all people--from family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, strangers, and those who you may not see eye-to-eye. I believe everyone has value, regardless of their background or beliefs.
One day soon I plan to share the positive differences the GY6 Movement will be making.
